The King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has successfully performed the first robotic liver transplant in the western region.

A 23-year-old man with an inherited chronic progressive liver disease has undergone surgery, marking a major advance in health care.

The surgery uses entirely robotic technology for donor liver resection and transplantation and does not involve direct manual intervention.

The surgery was performed in collaboration with the KFSHRC Riyadh Liver Transplant Team, improving precision, shortening recovery time and minimizing complications. Both the donor and recipient were discharged in good health.

KFSHRC plans to expand its program by performing robotic liver transplants twice a month. The hospital has become a leader in robotic surgery, performing the world’s first fully robotic liver transplant in 2023 and has completed 31 such surgeries to date.

In 2024, it completed the world’s first robotic heart transplant and the first robotic living donor left lobe liver transplant, further consolidating its global leadership in advanced surgical technology.
